The Fremantle Sailing Club is one of Western Australia's leading clubs — with roots in Fremantle's 19th-century sailing heritage and its own purpose-built Success Harbour. It runs strong inshore and, especially, offshore racing on the Indian Ocean and Cockburn Sound, in some of the breeziest conditions in the country. See our guide to sailing in Perth and Fremantle.
The club
The club is based at Success Harbour, a purpose-built harbour just south of Fremantle on the coast where Cockburn Sound meets the Indian Ocean. The harbour — built by the club in the late 1970s — gives sheltered berthing with direct ocean access, from a large marina and clubhouse. The club is a hub of WA sailing, particularly for offshore and ocean racing out of Fremantle.

History
Sailing in Fremantle dates to the 1870s, with the first regatta in 1872, and the modern club traces its official founding to 1919, following earlier clubs including the North Fremantle Sailing Club. In the late 1970s the club built its own Success Harbour, the clubhouse opening in 1979, giving it a dedicated home — and it has since marked a century of the state Governor's patronage.
Where it sails
Fremantle's coast is famous for its strong, reliable afternoon sea breeze — the Fremantle Doctor — which, over the Indian Ocean and Cockburn Sound, makes for some of the best and breeziest racing in Australia. The exposed coast especially suits ocean racing.
Racing
The club runs inshore keelboat and off-the-beach racing and a strong offshore and ocean-racing program, along with cruising and twilight series. Fremantle's conditions and the club's ocean access give it a long association with offshore events out of Fremantle. It shares WA's premier sailing waters with the Royal Perth Yacht Club up the Swan River.
Following the club
The Fremantle Sailing Club publishes its racing calendar and results through its official website. For the setting, see sailing in Perth and Fremantle and the Fremantle Doctor, and the sailing terms glossary for the vocabulary.
