Middle Harbour Yacht Club (MHYC) is a leading Sydney club — at The Spit on Middle Harbour, founded in 1939. It runs strong inshore and offshore racing and hosts the Sydney Harbour Regatta, one of the harbour's biggest events. With a long ocean-racing pedigree, it's one of Sydney's most active racing clubs. See our guide to sailing in Sydney and Sydney Harbour.

The club

MHYC sits at The Spit, in the Mosman area on Sydney's lower north shore, on Middle Harbour — a scenic arm of the main harbour. Its position gives it sheltered waters on Middle Harbour and quick access to the main harbour and, through the Heads, the ocean for offshore racing. It runs a broad program across keelboats, one-design and offshore, with a strong youth pathway.

History

The club was founded in 1939 as the Middle Harbour Cruising Yacht Association, formed by local sailors Togo Middows and George Griffin, who gathered a small group in Mosman to propose it. It was renamed Middle Harbour Yacht Club after the Second World War, and its first clubhouse opened in 1954. It has a genuine ocean-racing history — one of its yachts contested the Sydney Hobart from the 1950s.

The Sydney Harbour Regatta

The club's biggest event is the Sydney Harbour Regatta — a large keelboat regatta on Sydney Harbour that draws a substantial fleet across many divisions for a weekend of racing on one of the world's great sailing arenas. It's a standout on the Sydney calendar.

Where it sails

Sydney Harbour — with its shifting breezes, strong tides and dramatic setting — is one of the world's finest sailing venues. MHYC's Middle Harbour base adds sheltered water and easy access to the main harbour and the ocean, and it shares the harbour with clubs like the CYCA and Royal Sydney.

Following the club

MHYC publishes its racing calendar, Sydney Harbour Regatta details and results through its official website. For the setting, see sailing in Sydney and Sydney Harbour, and the sailing terms glossary for the vocabulary.
