Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron (BYS) is a large, member-owned yacht club and marina at the southern end of the Mornington Peninsula, sailing on Cameron's Bight at the bottom of Port Phillip. Founded in 1952, it has grown into one of Victoria's biggest sailing clubs, with a modern harbour and clubhouse, an active learn-to-sail centre and one of the largest J/70 keelboat fleets in the country. It is a short reach across the bay from the metropolitan clubs, and its position near the Heads gives it a distinctive mix of racecourse and cruising water. For the broader picture of sailing on this bay, see our guide to sailing in Melbourne and Port Phillip.

The club

BYS is a full-service club built around a modern marina and hardstand rather than a single beach or jetty. The current clubhouse, opened in the mid-2010s, replaced the previous building and added roughly half again as much floor area, and the harbour was extended in the same era to expand berthing and launching capacity. The club reports a membership in the low thousands, which places it among the larger sailing clubs in Victoria.

The sailing program spans several groups. Keelboats race under club series and one-design fleets; the J/70 sportsboat has become a signature class here, and BYS is generally regarded as home to one of the biggest J/70 fleets in Australia. Off-the-beach dinghies race close inshore, and the club runs an accredited Discover Sailing Centre offering adult and junior learn-to-sail courses, class coaching and inclusive programs. Cruising members use the marina as a base for the lower bay and Western Port beyond the Heads.

If you are new to organised racing and weighing up which club to approach, our guides on how to join a yacht racing crew and getting into sailing in Australia cover the practical steps, and the sailing terms glossary explains the vocabulary you will hear on the water.

History

The squadron dates to 1952, when a group broke away from nearby Sorrento Yacht Club and began sailing from Blairgowrie. The earliest arrangements were modest: members used a private slipway, jetty and boat shed, and the first clubhouse was a small tin shed with a sandy floor and no water or power. From those beginnings the club built up its facilities steadily over the following decades.

The most significant change came in the modern era. A major extension to the marina and hardstand was launched in 2009, followed by the construction of a new clubhouse from 2014 and a harbour extension project from 2015. Together these turned BYS from a traditional peninsula club into the large, purpose-built marina it is today, while keeping its long history on Cameron's Bight — one of the earliest settled parts of the peninsula — at the centre of its identity.

Where it sails

The club sits on Cameron's Bight, a shallow, sheltered bight on the southern shore of Port Phillip near Blairgowrie. Racing takes place at the southern end of the bay, and one of the venue's defining features is the Great Southern sandbank close to the clubhouse. Because the water there is shallow, shoal-draft boats such as the J/70 can race windward-leeward courses almost in front of the club, which makes for unusually good spectating and short travel to the start.

This southern position, closer to the Rip and the Heads than the metropolitan clubs, gives BYS access to the lower bay's sea breezes and tide-influenced water. Conditions can range from flat, protected racing inside the bight to firmer breeze and more sea state out on the open bay. The Melbourne and Port Phillip venue guide sets out the bay's wind and tide patterns in more detail, including how the afternoon sea breeze builds across the water.

Blairgowrie is one of a ring of clubs around Port Phillip. On the eastern, metropolitan shore, Sandringham Yacht Club and Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron run large keelboat and dinghy programs of their own, and boats from around the bay regularly travel between these venues for championship events.

Racing

BYS runs a full calendar across keelboats and off-the-beach dinghies. Club racing includes twilight and weekend series, with the J/70 one-design fleet a particular strength; the class's shallow draft and the sandbank courses off the club suit each other well, and BYS has hosted J/70 state-level championships in recent seasons.

The club's flagship keelboat event is the Petersville Regatta. It ran through the 1980s and into the 1990s as a highlight of the BYS season before lapsing, and has since been revived as the club's premier keelboat regatta, held over several days in late December. It draws entries from BYS and visiting boats from clubs around the bay. Alongside it, the club stages off-the-beach and one-design events through the season, supported by professional race management and the marina infrastructure.

For up-to-date sailing instructions, series calendars, entry details and membership information, the club's website at bys.asn.au is the authoritative source, and it publishes results and event notices through the season.
