The South of Perth Yacht Club is a leading Western Australian club at Applecross, on the south side of the Swan River a short distance from the Perth CBD. It runs a broad program across keelboats, off-the-beach dinghies and windsurfers — from junior training to championship fleets — on the sheltered water of Melville Water. For the setting, see our guide to sailing in Perth and Fremantle.
The club
The club — widely known as SoPYC — is based at Coffee Point in Applecross, on the southern shore of the Swan River near where the Canning River joins it. It sits less than 10 minutes from the Perth CBD, with the city skyline across the water, and is one of the busiest and most active clubs in WA.
Its home is a full-service sailing base rather than a single-discipline club. Facilities include a marina with water pens, hard standing and under-cover storage for racing dinghies, swing moorings, a slipway and marine hoist, and an accessibility hoist for sailors with a disability. That mix supports everything from a junior in an Optimist through to keelboat and cruising crews, and the club also runs a Sailing Academy with a program of accredited training courses. Alongside sailing, SoPYC has a long-standing powerboat section that runs competitive time-trialling.

History
The club was founded in December 1945, growing out of a push to give the young people of South Perth an organised sport. Its first race was held in early 1946, sailed from the South Perth foreshore, and its original clubhouse was a relocated army disposals building that members moved to the Como area themselves.
In 1960, with the Como site affected by the coming Kwinana Freeway, the club received State Government assistance to move to its present home at Coffee Point, Applecross. From that base it has grown steadily into a large, well-equipped club spanning several sailing disciplines, and in recent seasons it has marked its 75th anniversary — a milestone that places it among the more established WA clubs, though a generation younger than the century-old Fremantle Sailing Club and the Royal Perth Yacht Club.
Where it sails
SoPYC races on Melville Water, the wide, sheltered reach of the Swan River between Applecross and the northern shore, with the Canning River entering nearby. This is protected, flat-to-moderate river water rather than open sea — a contrast to the ocean racing out of Fremantle — which makes it well suited to dinghy, windsurfer and inshore keelboat racing and to junior training.
The defining feature of Perth summer sailing is the reliable afternoon sea breeze. Building through the day, it gives consistent, often brisk racing on Melville Water while the river's shape keeps the sea state manageable. That combination of dependable wind and sheltered water is a large part of why the Swan River clubs support such active fleets, and why Perth is a strong summer racing venue. For more on the conditions and the wider area, see sailing in Perth and Fremantle.
Racing
The club's calendar centres on summer and twilight series run across three broad areas: keelboats, off-the-beach dinghies, and windsurfers. Off-the-beach fleets have included the Optimist, O'pen Skiff, ILCA (Laser), 29er and windsurfer classes, while keelboat and sportsboat racing has featured classes such as the Flying 15 and Viper 640. Saturday summer racing runs from roughly October through to April, with championship-level races bringing out the strongest crews, alongside a junior program feeding the pathway from training into fleet racing.
SoPYC also has a track record as a host of major regattas. It has staged national and state championships across several of its resident classes and, over the 2023-24 summer, hosted the Windsurfer World Championships — a large international event that drew competitors from around the world to Melville Water. Events of that scale reflect both the quality of the venue and the club's organising capacity.
Together with the Royal Perth Yacht Club and the ocean-facing Fremantle Sailing Club, SoPYC forms part of the strong network of clubs on and around the Swan River and Perth's coast, each with a distinct character — river dinghy and windsurfer racing here, keelboats and heritage up the river, ocean racing out of Fremantle.
